Full Description

Description
Hincaster House is the central portion of a fine and substantial Victorian country house, thought to have been built in around 1836 on the site of a much older property. In about 1864 the house was purchased by a Mr Swinglehurst, owner of the gun powder works at Sedgwick, and considerably altered by the addition of two handsome, non-identical wings. It was split into three private residences in the late 1940's and the central portion retains the original name of the house.

Hincaster House offers exceptionally spacious family living accommodation which is well proportioned and versatile. Many interesting original features of character have been retained including a splendid verandah and garden room to the front of the house, an elegant dining hall with stained glass entrance door and an oak floor with marquetry detailing, the original staircase and a beautiful tall arched window to the bathroom with painted glass. Many rooms feature ornate decorative coving to the ceilings, pitch pine panelled doors and window reveals.

The property enjoys excellent views from the front over fields and there are equally pleasant views over the gardens to the rear.

LOCATION

The house is situated in the rural hamlet of Hincaster which is approached via country lanes and is surrounded by rolling countryside. The hamlet is well placed for Kendal and Milnthorpe. It is also convenient for access into the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and for junction 36 of the M6 motorway. The spectacular Levens Hall and Sizergh Castle are nearby and the coast around Arnside and Silverdale is beautiful.

Hincaster has a strong, active community organising seasonally relevant events. Hincaster is close to the excellent sports facilities of Dallam School including the charming outdoor swimming pool and tennis club.

The nearby market town of Milnthorpe has a regular market as well as a good range of shops, a highly regarded secondary school, pubs, cafes, excellent butchers and

churches. Historic Kendal provides a more comprehensive range of amenities and there is a railway station at Oxenholme for the London to Glasgow West Coast mainline.
